Itinerary

The "Baby Taj Mahal" is a common nickname for the tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah, which is officially known as the "Tomb of I'timād-ud-Daulah." This beautiful Mughal mausoleum is located in Agra, India, just a short distance away from the more famous Taj Mahal. The tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah is often referred to as the "Baby Taj" because of its similar architectural style and intricate marble inlay work, reminiscent of the larger and more famous Taj Mahal. Here is a description of the "Baby Taj Mahal" or Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah: 1. Architecture: The tomb is an architectural gem, characterized by its fine Mughal design and intricate details. It is often considered a precursor to the Taj Mahal and features a white marble structure with delicate inlay work, reflecting Persian and Islamic architectural influences. 2. Gardens: The tomb is set within a Charbagh (four-quartered) garden, with pathways and water channels that create a serene and picturesque setting. The surrounding gardens are beautifully landscaped and well-maintained. 3. Inlay Work: The tomb is renowned for its stunning inlay work, which includes intricate patterns, floral motifs, and semi-precious stone inlays, such as lapis lazuli and onyx, in a technique known as pietra dura. The inlay work is meticulously detailed and covers much of the interior and exterior surfaces. 4. Central Dome: The central structure of the tomb features a central dome, which is surrounded by four smaller chhatris (pavilions). The central dome is adorned with a lotus finial, adding to the elegance of the structure. 5. Interiors: Inside the tomb, you can find beautifully designed chambers with delicate marble screens, lattice work, and marble cenotaphs of Itimad-ud-Daulah and his wife Asmat Begum. 6. Historical Significance: The tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah was built between 1622 and 1628 and is considered one of the earliest examples of Mughal architecture in Agra. It holds historical importance as the tomb of Mirza Ghiyas Beg, who served as a high-ranking noble in the Mughal court and was the grandfather of Nur Jahan, the wife of Emperor Jahangir.
